
The very first race at West Capitol,
then known as Capitol Stadium on the Davis Hiway, was held May 26,
1947, 4,000 people attended. It was a Midget show and 40 cars showed
up to race. Johnny Soares out of Oakland, who was a veteran racer with
B.C.R.A. of just 3 years, won the 25 lap victory. Second was Bob Barkhimer.
Jerry Piper set the pace for the first 14 laps after getting a third in his
heat.
